Page Six gossip columnist Liz Smith reported that Russell and Jennifer were kissing, canoodling, and sharing cigarettes at the Critics Choice Awards for A Beautiful Mind. The word on set had been that Russell pursued his costar simimilarly to Meg Ryan on "Proof of Life": getting her tea, flowers, etc. He also bought her a pair of diamond earrings which she wore to the Oscars and various award shows at the time. However she did not leave her boyfriend Josh Charles for Russell and he moved on marry old flame Danielle Spencer, while Jennifer got dumped by Josh and quickly hooked up with and married her other Beautiful Mind costar, Paul Bettany.
