Barry Alan Crompton Gibb CBE (born 1 September 1946) is a singer, songwriter and producer. He was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, to English parents. With his brothers Robin and Maurice, he formed the Bee Gees, one of the most successful pop groups of all time. The trio got their start in Australia, and found their major success when they returned to England. He is known for his high-pitched falsetto singing voice. Gibb holds the record for consecutive Hot 100 Number Ones as a writer with 6.
Barry Gibb married a former "Miss Edinburgh (Scotland)" Linda Gray on 1 September 1970, choosing Barry`s birthdate "so he wouldn`t forget [their] anniversary" according to Linda from a 1979 biography of the Bee Gees. At that time they lived in Abbey House, a mansion block in London near the Abbey Road crossing made famous by The Beatles. They have 5 children: Stephen (1973), Ashley (1977), Travis (1981), Michael (1984), and Alexandra (1991). He has five grandchildren: Nina and Angus Levas Gibb (Stephen`s children), Lucas John Crompton Gibb (Ashley`s child), Damien Michael Crompton Gibb (Michael`s child), and Layla Victoria Gibb (Travis`s child). Michael Jackson is the godfather of Barry`s son Michael. Gibb`s son Steve Gibb has toured with the Bee Gees and is currently a guitarist for the bands Crowbar and Kingdom Of Sorrow. According to the biography Tales from The Brothers` Gibb ... In the early 90s Barry had a heart attack brought on by morphine during a back operation and suffers from arthritis. He also thought that his career was over because his hands were badly affected and sometimes wears a glove to keep his hand warm while playing the guitar.[citation needed] In January 2006 Gibb purchased the former home of country legends Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash in Hendersonville, Tennessee, intending to restore it and turn it into a songwriting retreat. The Bee Gees no longer exist. I have a little dictaphone and if a sound takes my fancy or if a lyric comes to me in the middle of the night I`ll just record it there and then. It is not the money but the self-respect and wanting to create good music. Maurice would prance into a room, you know, and his presence was immediate. As long as you`re having fun, that`s the key. The moment it becomes a grind, it`s over. He was the average guy. Maurice, I think, reflected every man. Maurice was a silly man. Maurice liked being silly. It`s very questionable, and we will pursue every factor, every element, every second of the timeline, of the final hours of Maurice`s life. We will pursue that relentlessly. That will be our quest from now on. The only thing that exists to me is commercial pop music. I don`t want to live on past records. We were very influenced by The Beatles, no question. I love making records; I love making music; I love writing songs. When you are in your 20`s and 30`s, you just want a hit record and you don`t really care how it happens. I have a huge ego and a huge inferiority complex at the same time. Sure I`m leaving the Bee Gees. I`m going into films. We enjoy change and freshness, and disco was only one area we`ve delved into. I`m Mr Boring, not a party-goer at all. I think they are grooming me as another Gary Cooper. It is commercial pop that the majority of people understand. A working man`s daughter would not understand blues. I`ve worked with a lot of people who are more famous than myself who are terribly insecure. I would be content if I had nothing but a tape-recorder. I could still write songs and record them. But even now, when people see me in the street, they point upwards to the sky. I`m the eldest at 51, and if the Stones can drag themselves around once more, then there`s a few more albums in us. Everybody is a teenage idol. I like blues but it is music I am too ignorant to understand. It was great being together as a band, but much more difficult being brothers than it was being in a band. By going solo I could lose a fortune but money is not important. I`m very much a family person. I don`t ever wish I was somebody else. We had to leave Australia to become international stars. I`ve never been into parties, premieres or night-clubbing. You are never really prepared for criticism. But all bubbles have a way of bursting or being deflated in the end. My music, certainly, has never embarrassed me. I will always have my songs and I don`t think I will ever dry-up. The secret is to make sure your family comes before anything else, because no matter what you do you`ve got to come home. The only thing I miss on stage is the falsetto. You can be tops in Australia and be unheard of everywhere else. Now there is a new group every week; it seems like everybody and anybody can get into the charts. I never really did any disco dancing. I just love the feeling a close family gives you and I wouldn`t change it for anything. Leaving Australia was the hardest thing I have ever done.
