Lifelong amateur, considered by many to be the best golfer in history. He won the entire Grand Slam in 1930, the only person ever to do so in a single year. Notoriously, he called a penalty on himself causing his loss in a tournament. Over his career he won 13 major championships. Although he never took money from his golfing, Jones did receive tidy sums from making short instructional films (in excess of $250,000) and other endorsements. He founded the Augusta National Golf Club, out of which came the Masters Tournament. Late in life Jones suffered from the spinal disease syringomyelia, confined to a wheelchair.
