Roberts was raised in Perry, Georgia. She graduated from the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism (A.B.J.) degree in 1982.

In 1982, Roberts began her career at WTVM-TV in Columbus, Georgia and then moved on to work at WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee. From 1987-90, she served as bureau chief/NASA field reporter/weekend news co-anchor at WFTV-TV in Orlando, Florida. In 1990, she joined NBC News as a general assignment reporter and later serving as a correspondent for Dateline NBC. Roberts moved to ABC News in 1995 as a correspondent for 20/20 and as a substitute anchor for World News Tonight Weekend and Good Morning America. In July and September of 2006, she was also a guest host on The View.

In his second autobiography, Have a Nice Day, wrestler Mick Foley accused her of editing an interview with him to make it appear that he approved of backyard wrestling.[citation needed]

In addition to her ABC News duties, Roberts is also the host of Lifetime Live on Lifetime Television.

Roberts resides in Manhattan with her husband, NBC meteorologist Al Roker, their daughter Leila and their son Nicholas.
