 I think this is going to turn out to be a bitter divorce. That`s one of the best percentages in the country. (But) we are about last in the country in bringing in people with degrees. We`re trying to add a little diversity to our campuses and gain a few brains. With tuition increases, students from the lower two-fifths of the income level are coming to university schools with less frequency. For this state to be competitive, we need our kids to get degrees. What public universities need to do is be the sources of access, hope and opportunity for young people in the state. We think we can raise our per capita income, build the knowledge base, the economy and get a little more competitive if we can produce more baccalaureate degrees. Folks who enjoy national parks tend to be environmentally conscientious. So how can we serve seafood that is being fished out of existence? It`s too early to tell on some of this stuff. Once we got down (to Florida), the $5 was a minor issue compared to other things. | ||
