Gerard Way was born in Newark, New Jersey to Donald and Donna Lee Way. He was raised in Belleville, New Jersey and first began singing publicly in the fourth grade, when he played the role of Peter Pan in a school musical production. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, was a great creative influence who taught him to sing, paint, and perform from a young age. He has referred to her in interviews, quoting that "She has taught me everything I know".
Gerard Way attended Belleville High School until he graduated in 1995. Deciding to persue a career in the comic-book industry he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999. In 2001 Way co-created a cartoon with Joe Boyle called The Breakfast Monkey. They pitched the cartoon to Cartoon Network, but they declined to pick up the concept, saying that it was too similar to aother existing property they allready have. Way was working for the Cartoon Network in New York City during the September 11, 2001 attacks. Seeing the effects of the attacks first hand prompted Way to change his views on life in the following weeks. To help deal with the emotional effects the attacks had on him, Way wrote the lyrics to the song `Skylines and Turnstiles` which since, has been regarded as "the first song by My Chemical Romance" .Soon after, the formation of My Chemical Romance began. In many interviews Way has stated that music turned out to be an effective outlet to deal with his long-time battles against depression, alcoholism and prescription drug use. The use of music as a way to resolve personal battles has caused Way to create deeply personal songs such as "Helena",which was written in memory of his late grandmother mentioned above. Way has recently established himself as comic-book writer, writing for the comic miniseries, The Umbrella Academy. All you knew was that this music made you feel different from anyone you shared a locker with. Someone finally understood you. This is what music is about. When I was writing it, I was remembering how hard it was to be a 16-year-old in high school. I always wanted to be an artist, so I was this loner kid who just got drunk all the time. I only had one real friend. There was a girl I really liked, and she ended up taking really sleazy photographs with her boyfriend, and that really crushed me, I was just swimming in this pit of despair, jealousy and alcoholism. Surrounding myself with fans makes me feel like I`m not going through it alone." There was a moment in my life when I really wanted to kill myself. And there was one other moment when I was close to that. But even in my most jaded times, I had some hope. When we first started out I had a really big issue and a lot of my loved ones had a really big issue with the fact that I was totally in pain up there and there was a time when I tried to hurt myself off stage, but I got over that. Like, you should never want to hurt yourself. You should love yourself. Sometimes you have to kind of die inside in order to rise from your own ashes and believe in yourself and love yourself and become a new person and I think that that is going to be a lot of what the next record is about, not to plug it or anything. Like, it`s going to talk about dying and coming back to become what you totally want to become. We are all becoming what we want to become.Trivia His first girlfriend`s name was Olivia. Released his own comic book series entitled 'The Umbrella Academy' on September 19, 2007 through Dark Horse Comics. Good friends with Green Day frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong. Friends with Brandon Flowers ever since they met in early 2007. Singer of My Chemical Romance. Gerard is 1/2 Italian (mother's side), and also 1/2 Scottish (father's side). He originally wanted to be a comic book artist. He pitched a cartoon series called "The Breakfast Monkey" to Cartoon Network, but gave up on art and helped form My Chemical Romance after 9/11 because it made him realize he had to do something with his life. His first ever concert was a Smashing Pumpkins concert. When he was in the 4th grade, he was the only boy to try out for his school's production of Peter Pan and he got the role. He drew the cover of My Chemical Romance's second album "Three Cheers for Sweet revenge".
