Jericho Vibar Rosales (born September 22, 1979) is an accomplished actor, singer, and dancer from the Philippines.
From humble beginnings, he has become one of the most successful young artists of his generation. Echo, as he is fondly known, has received a number of Best Actor trophies and nominations for both television and film from such prestigious award giving bodies as the Film Academy of the Philippines, the Gawad Urian, the Metro Manila Film Festival, the PMPC, the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, and the FAMAS Awards.
He was discovered in a local noontime show, Eat Bulaga, after winning Mr. Pogi, a male looks & personality contest in 1996. He soon after joined the talent center of Philippine broadcasting company ABS-CBN, and was quickly given the chance to showcase his natural acting abilities.
Several appearances on television programs like the long-running Maalaala Mo Kaya, and telenovelas like Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas and Pangako Sa `Yo caught the attention of the industry and also turned him into a household name. His acting in the episode, Pasa, of Maalaala Mo Kaya earned him his first Best Actor Star Award by the PMPC. The airing of these shows in other countries also made him into a regional star, particularly in Malaysia, where Pangako Sa `Yo was a runaway hit.
His transition to the big screen was an effortless one and his stand-out performances in critically-acclaimed films such as Tanging Yaman, Bagong Buwan, Noon at Ngayon, Santa Santita, and Nasaan Ka Man sealed his status as a serious actor. His last feature film was the life story of world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao wherein he played the lead. The result was another Best Actor Star Award from the PMPC in 2007.
But Echo, as his is fondly known, is not one to rest on his laurels. A famous writer once said, “the toughest thing about being a success is that you’ve got to keep on being a success.” Apart from acting, he has also ventured into the field of music – a tough business to crack where being a celebrated actor does not guarantee commercial or critical credit as a musician. His first effort, LOOSE FIT, a self-penned 14-song album with his band Jeans was released in Malaysia in 2007 and eventually was picked up for local release by EMI Philippines. Though it made critics heads turn, his tv and film followers were taken aback by the progressive direction that his initial music foray took and sales were tepid.
However, Echo has been able to defy this and even though it is yet a new mountain to climb, his renewed efforts have not gone unnoticed and unheralded. His 2-night sold out show, Raw Energy, at the Music Museum in 2007 was well received by both critics and the public. It was this collaboration with Philippine music icon Gary Valenciano that put him on the local music map. “Paglisan,” the first single from his latest album JERICHO, released by EMI hit number one in top-rating radio stations. A follow-up single, “Beautiful In My Eyes,” has started to attain similar success, topping public-request lists in top ranked fm stations Love Radio and Baranggay LS.
As a true adventurer who enjoys life, Echo is not one who backs down from a challenge and continually seeks out new ways to master whatever endeavor he enters. Ever an avid surfer, he is always on the lookout as to how he can best ride that wave when it comes - both literally and figuratively. But even though he is standing high, not everythi
