John Gilbert Biography

John Gilbert (a.k.a. The Great Lover of the Silver Screen) was born John Cecil Pringle July 10, 1899, in Logan, Utah. The son of an actress, he made his first stage appearance as an infant and played an extra in films during his adolescence. The Merry Widow launched him to fame in 1925, and by 1928 he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood. He is best known for his starring role in The Big Parade, the most successful film of the silent era, and, in fact, the most successful film until Gone with the Wind. He made nearly one hundred films before his untimely death in 1936.

Trivia
  • A one-man play on the life of John Gilbert, entitled Silenced Idol, was announced in August 2006. The two-act theatrical work is by Tony Maietta (who also portrays Gilbert) and Jeffrey Vance.
  • Interred at Forest Lawn, Glendale, CA., in the Whispering Pines section near the top of the hill.
  • MGM star Gilbert had a huge enemy in Louis B. Mayer after Gilbert pummeled Mayer while defending lady love Greta Garbo`s honor. It is said that Mayer himself, and/or his chief sound engineer, manipulated the knobs of Gilbert`s first talking films so that a perfectly adequate speaking voice came out on the big screen as ridiculously high pitched. Sure enough, when the actor`s shrill declarations of love in His Glorious Night (1929) hit movie theaters, audiences howled with laughter. This proved to be the beginning of the end for the decade`s highest paid matinée idol ($250,000 per film).
  • Was left standing at the altar in 1927, after Greta Garbo got cold feet about marrying him.
