Quotes
We are all alpha males, and in the context of the Police, Sting is our top dog. When I was younger I had a problem with that. Now I`m older, I am wise. I do have a life I am president of, in which I am a film composer and all kinds of things on which to hang my alphaness.
In 1977, in the beginning of the Punk revolution, suddenly there weren`t enough bands and so it was possible to form a group and hit those gigs. We went straight on the road and just learned by playing the gigs. We couldn`t take care of the number of gigs that were available. It didn`t last long because by the end of `77, when Andy joined, the scene had tapered out considerably and there were millions and millions of groups. That`s why we came to America.
When we were young, we had to conquer the world. Now I just enjoy playing my drums. I don`t have to worry about making my name in music.
One day I lent Sting some Bob Marley albums for a party, and suddenly he wasn`t listening to anything else. He came down to the next rehearsal having sussed out the bass lines, and how it actually works, and suddenly I was able to achieve that intake of breath that you get from the weird reggae dropped beat, and it worked. So the turning point was when I had a bass player who could play the bass line, I mean it doesn`t happen unless those two elements are working together, you king of push and pull each other.
Sting`s my guy! I found him. I`m proud of him. When they shouted his name at shows, I was like, `Yeah, that`s my guy.` I think it`s about sibling position. When you`re the youngest, it`s easy to identify with older brothers, and my brothers were very charismatic when I was growing up. Even when you`re a shining light yourself, there`s always a brighter bulb standing next to you. There`s nothing more natural for me in the world than standing next to a brighter source of light - I don`t mind. It just better be pretty fucking shiny.
My father brought me up on Buddy Rich; musically, my background at home was big band jazz from my father and Stravinsky from my mother. In England my father played trumpet with the pre-war Tommy Dorsey Band and the wartime Glenn Miller Orchestra. I would like to think that I swing rather than rock.
When I think of my work with the Police, there are no problems, nothing that isn`t right, nothing I`m pissed off about, no moot points. And, happily, our association with each other is proving profitable and mutually beneficial.
As a singer there isn`t anybody in the world who could do a better job than Sting. He`s in tune and he`s got a great rhythmic feel. He was born with that voice, but he uses it so well too. And I`ve got a definite telepathy with his bass playing.
