Rod was performing in vaudeville as a teenager. He signed a studio contract with Famous Players-Lasky after he got his big break. Cecile B. DeMille gave him a role in The Ten Commandments (1923). He proved his worth by being able to play many roles, comedy, romantic, and the swashbuckler.
In 1941, he made his last movie, Meet John Doe, with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.

Many of his films still survive.
