Cynthia Powell was born on September 10, 1939 in Blackpool, England to Charles Edwin and Lillian Powell. Cynthia had two older brothers, Charles and Tony.
Cynthia became interest in art when she was 12 and attended Junior Art College where she met her best friend, Phyllis Mackenzie. At the age of 17, in June 1957, Cynthia`s father, Charles, died of cancer. That same year, Cynthia attended Liverpool College of Art where she met John Lennon in Lettering class Cynthia was, at first, not fond of John at all. At the time, she had a very serious boyfriend and was planning to become an art teacher. Then, unexpectantly, Cynthia realized that she was in love with John and would do anything to require his attention towards her. In summer of 1958, a few days after College was to be let out for a holiday, Cynthia and Phyllis attended a small gathering party in one of the rooms of College. John was there and asked Cynthia to dance to "To Know Him is to Love Him" by the Teddy Bears. John asked her if he could see her again but Cynthia told him that she was engaged and John stormed off. Later, John asked Cynthia and Phyllis to come over to Ye Crack, the student`s local bar. John didn`t chat up Cynthia so she was starting to leave when John called out to her. A few hours later, John and Cynthia went to get fish and chips and head over to Stuart Sutcliffe`s flat (apartment) and made love for the first time. Since then, Cynthia had broken up with her then boyfriend. Knowing John`s fascination with Brigette Bardot, Cynthia changed the color of her hair from brown to blonde and changed her fashion style. John quickly christened Cynthia as "Cyn". Cynthia often occupied John to his regular sessions with Paul McCartney and George Harrison. To any performances, Cynthia went with them to help with the equipment, holding microphone stands for the band as they played. Soon after Cynthia and John got involved, George used to meet them from College and would accompany them wherever they went. In 1960, John, Paul, George, Stuart, and Pete Best went to Hamburg, Germany. Daily letters from John arrived at Cynthia`s home. In April of 1961, when Cynthia had her Easter holiday from College, she and Dot Rhone, Paul`s girlfriend, travelled to Hamburg to visit their boyfriends. There, she met Astrid Kirchnerr, who became a good life-time friend. When she came back after two weeks, her mother told her that she was going to move to Canada to act as a Nanny to Cynthia`s cousin`s baby. Cynthia got her own flat near Penny Lane and Liverpool College of Art. Dot also moved next door to the flat next to Cynthia`s where John and Paul were frequent visitors. On April 10, 1962, John and Cynthia`s good friend, Stuart Sutcliffe, died in Hamburg, Germany. He had previously quit the Beatles in hopes of continuing his dream as an artist and be with Astrid. In August, Cynthia informed John that she was pregnant and they got married on August 23, 1962 at Mount Pleasant Registry Office with Paul, George, Brian Epstein, Tony and his wife Margery in attendance. Brian gave John and Cynthia his flat that he rarely used and that night, John continued his tour. In November of 1962, during her third month of pregnancy, Cynthia had a threatening miscarriage that had her bedridden for three days. When John came home, they moved to John`s Aunt Mimi`s home so that Mimi could be there for Cynthia while she`s pregnant.
