Newhart was introduced by Buddy Hackett to Virginia "Ginnie" Quinn, the daughter of character actor Bill Quinn (who died in 1994). They were married on January 12, 1963. The couple have four children (Robert William November 4, 1963, Timothy, Jennifer and Courtney Quinn December 2, 1977), and several grandchildren. They are Catholic and raised their children as such, but Ginnie said they did not want them to have "the fears" that came from their upbringing
