Petra Nemcova and photographer Simon Atlee dated for about a year and a half before Simon died in a tsunami in Thailand in December 2004 while the two were vacationing together. Atlee was presumed missing until his body was found in March 2005 in Sumatra. Petra managed to hold onto a palm tree during the intense waters, and suffered a broken pelvis and several other internal injuries.
