Claim to Fame Shah of Iran

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (Persian: محمدرضا پهلوی, 26 October 1919 – 27 July 1980), widely known in the West as Mohammad Reza Shah (محمدرضا شاه) and also as Reza II, was the last Shah (King) of the Imperial State of Iran from 1941 until his overthrow in the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Owing to his recognition and status as Iran's final monarch, he is usually known simply as the Shah. Mohammad Reza Shah took the title Shahanshah ("King of Kings") on 26 October 1967 and held several other titles, including that of Aryamehr ("Light of the Aryans") and Bozorg Arteshtaran ("Commander-in-Chief"). He was the second and last monarch of the House of Pahlavi to rule within Iran. His dream of what he referred to as a "Great Civilization" (Persian: تمدن بزرگ, tamadon-e bozorg) in Iran led to a rapid industrial and military modernization, as well as economic and social reforms.

While being the absolute monarch of Iran, he was known to be a powerful and ruthless.
Ironically, when he was toppled by the Iranian revolution, he went to history as a weak, mellow, indecisive and insecure ruler who was suffering from megalomania. While he didn`t trust the Americans and the British, he often relied on them to maintain his rule. This was very evident in the last days of the Pahlavi monarchy, when he often relied on Washington`s "advise", while at the same time accusing them for conspiring against him.
Who in his sane mind would rely on his enemy`s advise?

Mike TApr 25, 2007

He was no saint, but was the only Moslem head of state to allow religious, individual and women`s rights and freedom.
He governed Iran as a secular Western style state.
The presidents of France and the US violated their treaties with him by releasing the Ayatollas and Mullahs upon Iran in 1978 and withdrawing their support.
The excuse given was that the Shah used his "secret police" to surpress the Islamists from enforcing Islamic Law on the land, thus violating the so called "Human Rights" of the Islamists.
