The "Friends of the Walk of Fame" effort is aimed at generating $4 million to replace as many as 800 of the damaged stars in time for the walk`s 50th anniversary celebration in 2010. "The founders of the Walk of Fame could not have imagined that the creation of a sidewalk of stars would become a top attraction that draws millions of visitors from around the world each year," said Leron Gubler, president and chief executive officer of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. "It is a treasured piece of Hollywood and it is our deeply felt responsibility to provide for its preservation into the future." The fundraising effort received a jump-start from Absolut vodka, which made an undisclosed donation to the effort and will receive a Friend of the Walk of Fame honorary star. Gubler said Los Angeles city and county officials are exploring possible funds for the effort, along with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the Metro Red Line that runs beneath the famed walk. Christi Van Cleve, vice president of the Hollywood Historic Trust, said the organization has some funding for repair work, but not nearly enough. "Under the leadership of the late Johnny Grant, individual star repairs have been made over the years, but there is a lot of work to be done," she said. "The trust has set aside money from the Walk of Fame star ceremonies for the larger restoration needed, but these funds fall short of the $4 million to $5 million needed." A 50th anniversary celebration for the Walk of Fame is planned for November 2010 -- a half-century after then-chamber president E.M. Stewart first suggested the creation of the walk. The Chamber of Commerce has evaluated all 2,365 stars on the walk and assigned them letter grades, with the ones in most need of repair receiving grades of C, D or F. Among those receiving F grades were the stars of Joan Collins, Peter Frampton, Dick Van Patten and Bobby Sherman.
