 Then: Few stars shone brighter in the late `70s than Michael Cimino, who directed the blistering "The Deer Hunter" (1978), which won both Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. But his very next film, "Heaven`s Gate," nearly sank its studio with its bloated ... morebudget and bleak story line (though the film has been critically revisited, favorably, in recent years). Overnight, it seemed Cimino`s promising career had burned out like a bottle rocket. Now: Cimino has directed a few films over the years ("Year of the Dragon," "Desperate Hours" -- and reportedly was under consideration for a time to direct "Footloose," of all things) but has mostly become something of an international man of mystery. Rumors swirled in the early 2000s that he was planning a sex-change operation, and while his appearances at film festivals in the past few years have dispelled those stories, his countenance has altered considerably since the `70s, suggesting radical weight loss and plastic surgery. He`s reportedly in pre-production on "Man`s Fate," based on an André Malraux novel.
