 Then: The winsome, dead-serious young McNichol shot to stardom in the acclaimed drama "Family," which first aired in 1976, as the just-hitting-puberty Buddy. McNichol`s performances were compelling enough to earn her two Best Supporting Actress Emmy awards ... moreduring the run of the show (not to mention a Kristy McNichol doll). She starred in a few films during her peak, and went on to co-star in "Empty Nest" in the late `80s. Now: McNichol struggled with bipolar disorder during the height of her fame, and in fact left "Empty Nest" after only a few seasons when her disease took a turn for the worse. She returned for the farewell episode, in 1995, to much love and appreciation from her fellow cast members. Though she has done voice-over work in the past 15 years, she`s mostly stayed out of the limelight. She released her last public statement to the press in 2001, saying, "A lot of people have wondered what I`ve been up to. I retired from my career after 24 years. My feeling was that it was time to play my biggest part -- MYSELF! I must say that it has been the best thing that ever happened to me."
