Nov. 19) -- Apparently even the fictional streets of Salem aren`t safe from the recession - Soap Opera Digest is reporting that budget cuts on `Days of Our Lives` have forced producers to axe two very long-time cast members. Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John), who have been on the show for 32 and 22 years respectively, are the first two casualties of the slump.
Hodestyn`s character had gone missing before, but the dismissal feels more foreboding than his three-month hiatus last year. Executive Producer Ken Corday says, "The couple will be happily reunited after a long period of angst and separation and will be off-screen after January for an unknown period of time. It was a very tough decision to make."
`Days of Our Lives` recently received an eighteen-month renewal - a far cry from their last contract, which kept the show running for five years
