Kimberley has joined celebs including Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, fellow Girls Aloud bandmate and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole, Take That’s Gary Barlow and Denise Van Outen to climb the African mountain to raise money for this year’s Comic Relief appeal. Yesterday, after Sunday’s gruelling four-hour trek through the rainforest to get to base camp, the team set off on the first part of their climb. But the intense training prior to the event left Kimberley, 28, with a painful condition known as Morton’s Neuroma. Her dad John, of Allerton, said: “She had medical advice to pull out but after some pain-killing injections she said she felt better and wanted to give it a go. “She would have been devastated if she’d been forced to abandon the climb. She and Cheryl are so keen to finish that I think they would have set off a day early if it meant that they were the first two to get to the top.” John spoke to his daughter the day before they set off on the first stage of the climb. He said: “It sounds really painful – it’s an inflamation of the nerves. The injections help but they sound painful to have as well. She’s got it in both feet.” The trek to the summit and back will take eight days, and medical staff will be keeping a close eye on Kimberley throughout the climb. John added: “She is determined that she won’t wimp out of it, unless it gets so bad that they really insist she can’t go any further. She’s worried about going slower than the rest of the party. She’ll be really devastated if it gets to the point they say she has to quit.” Kimberley also has her immediate future to think of – in April and May Girls Aloud are on a 34-date arena tour which will see the girls put through punishing dance routines. The stars flew out from Heathrow on a Kenya Airways plane with its nose painted red for the occasion on Friday. Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 19,340ft above sea level, and is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
