`Grit`-ty John Wayne Classic Gets an Update

The Coen brothers will team up again with producer Sott Rudin, who worked with them on the Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men.” Adapted from Charles Portis’ book of the same name, the brothers promise that their version of “True Grit” will not be a traditional remake and that it will follow the book more closely than the 1969 adaptation. If their past movies (“Miller’s Crossing,” “Blood Simple,” “Fargo”) are any indication, movie-goers can be sure that the Coens will also be taking a much darker and gorier slant on the story. The 1969 version starred a legendary cast including Wayne, Kim Darby, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper. When you look at that cast line-up in print, it’s difficult to imagine how a revamp of the movie (even with the gifted Coen brothers at the helm) can live up to the original. Who can possibly wear an eye patch like John Wayne? Aussie hunk Russell Crowe or pretty-boy-cowboy Hugh Jackman? I don’t think so. Perhaps tough guy Tommy Lee Jones?
