Zhang Yimou Plans Chinese Remake Of Coen Brothers' 'Blood Simple'

It's hardly uncommon for the American film industry to remake popular foreign films. Take Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed," based on the Hong Kong-spawned "Infernal Affairs" series. How often does it work the other way around though? Before you ask, yes, I am aware of "Indian Thriller." Such a reverse remake is in the works via Sony Pictures Classics, which will distribute filmmaker Zhang Yimou's planned remake of "Blood Simple," the classic thriller that marked Joel and Ethan Coen's first co-directorial endeavor. The distribution deal means that the still untitled "Blood Simple" remake will see release in North America, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand. According to Variety, Yimou's take on "Blood Simple" sets the plot in a desert-bound Chinese noodle shop as the restaurant's owner plans to murder his adulterous wife and her lover. The original "Blood Simple" -- not only the debut of the Coens as directors, but also the first major work of actress Frances McDormand, Joel Coen's wife -- followed a similar conceit, though it was set around a small town Texas bar instead of a noodle shop. Suppressing that knee-jerk response to wave the "This is a bad idea!" flag isn't easy, but bear with me for a second. Sure, on the surface this looks as dubious a decision as remaking "Let The Right One In." Yimou's resume is pretty impressive though. After all, he is the director responsible for acclaimed Chinese films "Hero" with Jet Li and "House of Flying Daggers" with Zhang Ziyi. So what we're potentially looking at with Yimou's "Blood Simple" remake is an insanely visceral, martial arts-heavy revenge flick. As far as remakes go, that sounds pretty awesome by my standards -- and if Yimou can get the Coens on board, I think we'll have a pretty fun film here.
