Hugh Dancy has admitted he was daunted by playing a man with Asperger syndrome in romantic drama Adam.

The British actor said he had a meeting with director Max Mayer to air his concerns but he was convinced to take the role.

"I almost tried to find reasons not to do it and they would all evaporate, they weren`t good enough," said Hugh.

He added: "Eventually I had a meeting with Max, who wrote and directed the movie, and I had a few flimsy questions about the script which was my excuse for meeting - and he batted those away very quickly."

Hugh, who in real life is engaged to US star Claire Danes, continued: "I said `look really what I just wanted to say was help, help me out here` because it not something you could do on your own.

"It was ultimately quite an enclosed experience because the character is shut off, even in this relationship that he has with Beth, it`s often kind of in a bubble. So the fact that Max was there and he had done all of the work and more, then I went to do for myself, was very important."
