"Extra" Lifechanger Dr. Lawrence Piro examines Suzanne Somers' shocking claim that it was cancer treatment -- not cancer -- that killed Patrick Swayze. In an explosive new interview, Somers suggests that Patrick succumbed to the chemotherapy, which Suzanne opted out of when battling breast cancer. "When I turned down conventional treatment, chemotherapy, I was warned, 'You'll probably die if you do this' and I said, 'I don't think so.'" Suzanne told reporters of Swayze, "They took this beautiful man, and they basically put poison in him." Dr. Piro tells "Extra" that while chemotherapy is hard on the body, sometimes it is necessary to beat the disease. "While chemotherapy is technically a type of a poison, it is a poison that actually saves lives. There are many cancers that are cured by chemotherapy." Piro, who treated Farrah Fawcett during her battle with cancer, says chemotherapy was Patrick's best choice of treatment. "In the setting of advanced pancreatic cancer, chemo is the very best choice." Somers chose bio-identical hormone therapy over chemo to treat her disease, and has been cancer-free for eight years, but Dr. Piro warns that what works for one, may not work for all. "That is one individual case... there are many kinds of cancer, and cancer behaves differently in each individual. In the end, the best choice is the patient's choice."
