WASHINGTON (AFP) - Mardy Fish, who stunned world number one Roger Federer in last month`s ATP final at Indian Wells, will join Andy Roddick in skipping the Beijing Olympics for a US Open tuneup event.

Fish, a silver medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, committed Monday to the ATP Washington Classic, which will be played August 9-17 opposite the Olympic men`s tennis tournament.

Roddick had already said he would defend his title at Washington rather than represent the United States at Beijing because it would offer a better preparation for the US Open, which begins eight days after Washington`s final.

Fish, ranked 42nd overall, is the third-ranked US player on the ATP Tour behind sixth-ranked Roddick and eighth-rated James Blake.

"Participating enables me to get the match play I need in preparation for New York," Fish said.

Also committing to Washington was John Isner, the hard-serving American who won five matches in a third-set tie-breaker last year at Washington before losing to Roddick in the final.
