Leeza Gibbons` Mom Passes Away

Television personality Leeza Gibbons shared the sad news on Tuesday that her mother, GLORIA JEAN GIBBONS, had passed away from complications due to Alzheimer`s disease. Gloria Jean was 72.

The matriarch of the Gibbons family, who was born in South Carolina on March 26, 1936, passed away on Thursday, May 22, and funeral services were held over the weekend. In addition to Leeza, she is survived by her husband of 55 years CARLOS GIBBONS, her children CARLOS JR. and CAMMY, Carlos Jr.`s wife ANNE MARIE, six grandchildren and a sister.

Leeza said in a statement, "My family and I want to thank all those who have offered thoughts, prayers and support. It has wrapped us in a safe blanket of love as I grieve for my mother."

Gloria Jean, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer`s in 1999, was the inspiration behind the creation of The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation. The foundation created "Leeza`s Place," where both patients and caregivers dealing with chronic illnesses can go for support. There are now eight locations in the U.S.

Leeza said of her mother: "At home she always had the door open and the coffee on with plenty of time to sit and talk. It`s the same at Leeza`s Place. That was our inspiration behind our free services for caregivers dealing with any kind of chronic illness."

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation or your local Alzheimer`s Association chapter.
