Trivia
Filmed at the same high school as the TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997). Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Buffy in the series and who co-starred with Freddie Prinze, Jr. in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), has a small, non-speaking cameo. The same high school was used in _Not Another Teen Movie (2001)_ that parodied this movie in some cases line by line.
Rachael Leigh Cook`s character`s name, Laney Boggs, is a combination of the names of two characters played by Winona Ryder: Kim Boggs in Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Lelaina "Laney" Pierce in Reality Bites (1994). This is an apparent nod to Cook`s and Ryder`s physical resemblance.

M. Night Shyamalan reportedly did a script polish for this film.
The film contains several hidden references to the pop group Hanson, aisde from the photograph during Taylor`s campaign. The two main characters are named Taylor and Zac - two of the members of Hanson. Mackenzie, and Jesse - two minor characters, were younger members of the Hanson family.
