Trivia

  • Celebrities were not required to give the right answers for any questions. They were briefed before each show to help them with possible bluff answers, but were hearing the actual questions for the first time when each show was taped. Certain celebrities were often asked questions pertaining to specific categories. For example, Paul Lynde frequently got loaded questions just so he could come up with an initial funny response.
  • # # Bert Parks was the host for the unaired pilot.
  • # # Host Peter Marshall had said that most of the episodes were destroyed by NBC. But a Cable TV station found 3,500 episodes (while looking for the TV series "Dark Shadows" (1966)) and were sent to Game Show Network. Episodes began airing on April 15th, 2002.
  • Retired, reclusive actress Greta Garbo was such a big fan of the show she actually wrote a fan letter to Paul Lynde in care of the show`s taping location at NBC Burbank.
  • # # Ernest Borgnine was the first center square when the show premiered on NBC on October 17, 1966. Paul Lynde appeared the second week but didn`t appear in his permanent center square position until the fall of 1968.
  • Actor Jack Palance was once caught napping in his square during a taping; he had to be awakened by fellow panelist Michael Landon when a contestant called on him.
  • Whenever Big Bird appeared, he always referred to Peter Marshall as "Mr. Marshmallow", in a similar manner to how he refers to Mr. Hooper from `"Sesame Street" (1969)` as Mr. Looper.
  • The following Paul Lynde answers are famous censored moments from unknown episodes that have been shown on "bloopers and out-takes" compilation TV shows: (1) Question by Peter Marshall: "Paul, is there anything that can make a monkey cry?" Paul Lynde`s answer: "Yes ... when Cheetah found out that Tarzan swings both ways!" (2) Question by Peter Marshall: "Paul, according to mythology, which is better looking, a pixie or a fairy?" Paul Lynde`s answer: "Well, looks aren`t everything! [audience laughter] I`ll go for the fairy!"
  • `Rose Marie`(I) was the only regular (besides Peter Marshall) to appear on camera on the first (1966) and last (1980) NBC broadcasts.
  • Peter Marshall and his partner `Tommy Nooson` discovered the comedy team of Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, and helped get their career started by introducing them to their agent. Years later, Tommy Nooson was gravely ill, and Marshall never forgave Rowan for not going to see the person who helped launch his career. When Marshall was offered "The Hollywood Squares" he was initially reluctant to take the job, but took the offer when told the producers were going to hire Rowan for the host position if he didn`t take it.
  • Peter Marshall was considering starring in the musical version of "Breakfast at Tiffany`s" when approached to host "The Hollywood Squares". The musical ultimately was a failure, closing before reaching Broadway.
