Trivia

Trivia and Quotes

Trivia
  • The house used as Vada`s house is actually a bed-and-breakfast in Bartow, Florida.
  • Macaulay Culkin`s first on-screen kiss.
  • The film`s original title was "Born Jaundiced", which the producers understandably elected to change. To do that, they offered a $500 incentive to whichever Imagine employee who could come up with the best alternative. As a lot of the film is set in a funeral parlor, a lot of the suggestions were along the lines of "Mourning Glory", "In Lieu of Flowers" and "Dearly Departed". Other alternatives included "Vada!" (the name of Anna Chlumsky`s lead character) which was rejected on the grounds that it sounded like a South African uprising, and "I Am Woman". Ultimately, it was the film`s producer Brian Grazer who came up with My Girl (and presumably pocketed the $500 reward himself).
  • The original script was entered in the Nicholl Fellowship screenwriting contest and didn`t get past the first round.
  • Because of a scene in which Anna Chlumsky and Macauley Culkin become blood brothers by mixing each other`s blood from a cut, the British Board of Film Classification insisted that the film carry a warning to children against performing such a ritual to prevent the transmission of HIV.
  • SPOILER: The MPAA originally gave the movie a PG-13 rating because of Thomas J`s death at the end. It was changed to PG on appeal because they decided that they couldn`t base the rating on just one certain part in the movie.
