The "volcanic ash" was really fine newspaper shavings.

Most of the film`s exteriors were shot in Wallace, Idaho, and Dante`s Peak and surrounding scenery were then digitally added.

A great many special effects in the movie were practical special effects, using real-world models or full-size properties and vehicles.

All crater scenes were shot at Mt St Helens

The dogs that played Roughy were wolf hybrids (part wolf and part Airedale Terrier).
