Trivia and Quotes

Quotes
  • Trixie Lorraine: Isn`t there going to be any comedy in the show? Barney Hopkins: Oh, plenty! The gay side, the hard-boiled side, the cynical and funny side of the depression! I`ll make `em laugh at you starving to death, honey. It`ll be the funniest thing you ever did.
  • J. Lawrence Bradford: Every time you say `Cheap and Vulgar` I`m going to kiss you. Carol King: Cheap and Vulgar! [kiss] Carol King: Cheap and Vulgar! [kiss] Carol King: Cheap and Vulgar! [long kiss]
  • Trixie Lorraine: "Fanny" is Faneul H. Peabody, just the kind of man I`ve been looking for, lots of money and no resistance.
    Trivia
  • In the same scene where actor Ned Sparks yells, "Cancel my contract with Warren and Dubin!" he refers in passing to "the Astaires". At the time this film was being made, Fred Astaire and his sister Adele were the reigning brother/sister duo on Broadway. Astaire`s next partner Ginger Rogers happens to be in this scene where the Astiares are mentioned.
  • Various people, including director Mervyn LeRoy and choreographer Busby Berkeley have claimed credit for Ginger Rogers`s pig-Latin rendition of "We`re in the Money". In her autobiography, Rogers gives the credit to then Warner Bros executive Darryl F. Zanuck.
  • At one point Barney Hopkins yells, "Cancel my contract with Warren and Dubin!" `Harry Warren` and Al Dubin were the most successful songwriting team in Hollywood at that time, and Warren in fact wrote all the songs for this picture.
  • The musical numbers were added to the film after it was already finished due to the enormous success of Busby Berkeley`s routines in 42nd Street (1933).
  • A further production number with Ginger Rogers singing "I`ve Got to Sing a Torch Song" was planned, but didn`t make it in the movie.
  • Originally was planned to end with the production number "Petting in the Park", but after seeing the complete numbers, the studio to added the politically charged "My Forgotten Man" at the end, pointing up that while the cast is "in the money", many others were not in depression era America. Remains of the old order are visible; in the final backstage scene, Ruby Keeler and the chorus girls are all wearing costumes for the number "Pettin in the Park".
