 Featured the lone film appearance of Brynn Hartman, `Phil Hartman``s wife and eventually murderer. There is a myth that Roger Ebert`s review of this film contained the first use of "I hated, hated, hated this movie", which became something of a catchphrase. In actuality that is a misquote. Ebert wrote, "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it." Scarlett Johansson`s first movie. # Alexander Godunov and Kelly McGillis play the Amish parents - a joke on the movie Witness (1985) where they also played Amish characters.
The members of the Nelson family, Ward, Donna, Bud and Laura, are named after characters from classic family television shows. Ward named after Ward Cleaver from "Leave It to Beaver" (1957), Donna named after Donna Stone from "The Donna Reed Show" (1958), Bud named after Bud Anderson from "Father Knows Best" (1954), and Laura named after Laura Ingalls from "Little House on the Prairie" (1974). Plus the last name of Nelson is named after Ozzie and Harriet Nelson from "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" (1952).
