Joe David Brown (12 May 1915 – 22 April 1976) was an American novelist and journalist from Birmingham, Alabama. He drew memorably from his own life to compose his fiction: his grandfather's role as a minister, his own knowledge of confidence games from his work as a reporter, his World War II experiences, and his residence on journalistic assignment in India. He is particularly remembered for the title character of his novel Addie Pray, the young "Mistress of the Con Game" during the Great Depression in the Deep South; an adaptation of the story later became the film Paper Moon.

Adeline Mae Loggins was where family say my belated Uncle Joe David Brown got the name, as it is the name on her tombstone as well. I always heard stories were based on my who it was based on - in the family ironically - though she lived in a different time and her name wasn't actually Addie. Too bad he died the year before I was born. Wish we could ask him. I am sure he was influenced by many factors, as I have been told. Best wishes.

Joe David Brown grew up as a boy across the alley from my grandmother, Addie Ozina Gibson Gourley. He was a dirty, snotty nosed little boy but she adored him and he adored her. He adored her because she baked cookies and gave them to him all the time. Her name Addie is, of course, where he got the name for Addie Pray. He also wrote a short story with my father, mother, step-mother, Uncle, and everyone`s teacher, too. My father--Paul, Mother Frances, Uncle Jim, Step Mother Effie, Elementary School Barrett School, East Lake. I cannot remember our teacher`s name right now. We all played in Village Creek in Birmingham, Alabama. It ran through East Lake Park.
