Distinctive Features
GANGSTERS, Written & directed by Robbie Benjamin. At the Little Theatre. In terms of sheer chutzpah, 20-year-old Robbie Benjamin is one young playwright/director who deserves multiple congratulations. This is for tackling a contemporary - and contentious - theme; for harnessing the energies of a large cast and producing a disciplined result; for single-handedly taking the initiative to stage the play in a commercial theatre. In the programme notes that accompany GANGSTERS, Benjamin thanks a number of people for their assistance. But the in the end credit must go to him - and the accolades are well-deserved. This is a piece of work that deserves the exposure. KAREN RUTTER (Cape Times, Thursday, February 14, 1991 PLAYWRIGHT TACKLES THE ISSUES AND WINS MOST)
Perseverance and a passion for film making have brought recognition to Robert Benjamin. At the age of 26, he has the distinction of having written, produced and directed his first feature film, The Ghost, which was bought by Mnet for release later this year. His achievement is remarkable considering Benjamin has had no formal training, but has to rely on doing time on movie and commercial shoots. What is evident, though, is Robert Benjamin`s complete commitment to the art of film making. The script was written over a period of only five weeks. Actors received allowances and crew worked for half of what they are normally paid. The film was shot in days in Grabouw, Benjamin`s home town. (Screen Africa 1998)
Robert Benjamin is also known as Robert Benjamin-Sept. He started to work in the industry in 1992 after dropping out of UCT in his 2nd year (1991), while doing a BA degree in Drama and Languages as well as a performance diploma in the afternoon. This drastic change came as a result as of the success of his play, GANGSTERS, which he directed, wrote and produced. When asked why he did this. He answered: "Theatre has too many limitations. But then again I always wanted to do movies."
