Contrary to other claims I have already seen here, I feel that I AM ACTUALLY probably the biggest Susan Oliver fan in the world (that I know of personally, at any rate!) Although I am a mere child of 50 years, and wasn't physically around yet to have been there in the heyday when you could turn on the TV and catch popular shows of the time and Susan would be guest starring on at least two of them each week. I became acutely impressed by and keenly aware of her from reruns of STAR TREK and then I caught her on a first-run episode of the show FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES - A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET THE SERIES in 1988 in which, though Susan's physical appearance looked transparently like somebody who was actively dying, she gave as equally mesmerizing performance on that show just as she had as Vina on the STAR TREK pilot. After that, I sought out every bit of info I could on her, caught episodes of 50s, 60s & 70s shows in which she appeared, bought her autobiography called ODYSSEY - A DARING TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT, and, in late 1989, obtained a contact address for her and proceeded to introduce myself to her via a 4-page long gushing fan letter in which, in my typical long-winded fashion, told her everything about myself which might have been interesting to her, and especially, how incredibly beautiful, talented, humorous and advantageous I thought she was and how very much I sincerely admired her. Well I figured I'd be patient and not freak out too much if I never received a reply. But, time went on... and on... and on... Eventually I had more or less forgotten about the letter and moved on. I was at a good friends house late one evening drinking beers, playing pool and blasting some good, quality punk rock music, when another friend asked me if I knew that Susan Oliver had died. My heart just sank! "Why, no! I didn't!", I replied. He She handed me the issue of Psychotronic she was perusing and in the (always extensive and informative) obituary section, which always took up a good five or six pages at the back of the magazine, featuring a respectfully extended write up on each and every celebrity and their careers. So, Suse had died two years previously and I hadn't even been informed. Of course this was a good couple years before the internet had become a widely-accessible contemporary staple of mass usage, so, if you didn't look carefully or see it hardly mentioned in the papers or on the evening news, you were not made aware of it. Yes, my friends, for all of the years of good television that she had contributed to bringing to all of us, her painful decline and sudden death of lung cancer at the all-too-young age of just 59 years, and for as well-known and loved as she had always been among television fans and the general populace otherwise, her death wasn't even mentioned, even in brief, on any evening newscasts save but one, and that was personal friend, advocate and fellow pilot and newscaster Hal Fishman, who also expressed his personal grief over the loss of his good friend. It hadn't occurred to me until maybe 8 or nine years later that the likely chronology of events dictated that Susan (PROBABLY) HAD GOTTEN my gushing fan novella and (PROBABLY) even had an opportunity to read it, but that she (again PROBABLY) was just too weak and infirmed at the time to allow her the strength and clear-mindedness necessary to reach back out to me and respond in kind. It was this thought that I had reasoned in my own mind which gave me a sense of peace of acceptance knowing (in my heart of hearts) that Susan smiled and felt good one last time about having the opportunity of getting one last, ridiculously worshipful, funny and extra-involved letter from a 19 year old fan who felt that she was STILL the best thing to come down the pike since hash! Love and Kisses to you, Susie Q. Love always, Brandon Quinn

Does anyone know who she dated?

Never a day goes by that I do not think of SUSAN -the original and my daughter -SUSAN M.

My late husband Fred R. Bost instructed Susan Oliver in the best way to fly a single engine aircraft across the Atlantic. Before her crossing they were highlighted on a Johnnhy Carson show. It`s interesting to note that once across the Atlantic she chose not to make the return trip in her own aircraft but instead returned by commercial plane. I never understood why she was not more successful in acting since she was so beautiful and talente

I am retired USAF - 1973- we named our daughter Susan M Oliver - born 5-19-1965. I have a letter from Susan Oliver - sent to me in VIETNAM in 1966 -our daughter`s first birthday.

No, she never married. She was a beautiful and outstanding woman. Her movies, unfortunately, were not as good as her appearances on television.

I knew Susan Oliver best from that critically-acclaimed episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Was she ever married?

Doug ReaJan 20, 2009

I had known of Susan Oliver mainly through her role in the Star Trek pilot. I did not know until recently that she was an important woman aviator, and that sadly she had passed on. The lasting good news is that she definitely made her mark in acting and flying.

I`ve been crazy about Susan Oliver ever since Star Trek "The Menagerie". It tore me up when she left this world.
