Leslie did insist that Bogey play the part of Mantee, if not, then he would not play Alan. Great movie!

Perhaps sombody can help me clear up a mystery. Several years after the death of Leslie Howard, probably in 1951, my grandmother and my mother made a strange encounter on the beach of Alassio on the Italian Riviera. They met a gentleman in every respect equal to actor Leslie Howard. This gentleman spoke a little Italian and had a brief conversation with the two ladies. My mother and my grandmother did not see him anymore and were never able to know who that mysterious man could be. That was especially exciting for my grandmother who had been a big fan of the died actor. Does anybody know if Leslie Howard had a double? Thanks for the help you can give me.

I`m not allowed to edit the biography section of this page, but I`d like to say to anyone interested: It wasn`t Bogie who helped Leslie get the part in The Petrified Forest; It was Leslie who insisted Bogie be case, stating `No Bogart, No Howard`. Leslie was a lot more famous than Bogie at that time (1936).
