Benedict Arnold (21 December 1615 – 19 June 1678) was president and then governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He served four and a half years as the President of the colony under the Patent of 1643/44, and then under the royal charter of 1663 became the colony's first governor, subsequently serving for an additional six and a half years in this capacity. Arnold learned the language of the Narragansett people, frequently acting as an interpreter, and like his father was able to acquire a significant amount of land from them.
