Zarine Khan (born 14 May 1984) is an Indian actress and model who appears in Bollywood and Kollywood films. Khan has been noted for looks very similar to actress Katrina Kaif. She made her acting debut in the 2010 Anil Sharma's period film Veer co-starring with Salman Khan for which shewas nominated for Zee Cine Awards, Best Female Debut.[1] Her second film was Housefull 2 which has become a huge commercial success Box Office India. Khan has also garnered recognition from her item number, Character Dheela the second highest grossing Bollywood film of 2011, Ready.

Early life [edit]

Khan was born into a Muslim, Pashtun family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She fluently speaks in Urdu, Hindi, English and Marathi.[citation needed] Although she never planned to be a model, she began to focus on losing weight and getting into shape. In order to lose weight, she began to work out, eventually reaching her target weight.[2] [3]

Khan wanted to be a doctor but joined acting. Her acting career began while visiting the set of Yuvraj[6] at Subhash Ghai's film school Whistling Woods. Salman Khan noticed her and decided to cast her for his friend Vijay Galani,s film Veer because, he said, "She looks the character — the sweet princess she is playing in Veer".[7] After a screen test, Khan was given the role of Princess Yashodhara. She gained eight kilograms in order to be more convincing as a 19th century princess.[8] Because of Veer's poor box office performance, Khan at first had trouble finding roles in big-budget films. In 2011, she made an item number Character Dheela, with Salman Khan in Anees Bazmee's Ready, parodying characters from Mughal-e-Azam, Sholay and Shri 420.

Breakthrough [edit]

In 2011, Khan appeared in her third film, Sajid Khan's Comedy film Housefull 2, which went on to become her first box office success, receiving blockbuster status. Khan played the role of JLo a model who is in love with Jolly, played by Ritesh Deshmukh and featured her alongside an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Asin, John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez.[10] Housefull 2 went on to becoming the tenth film in history to cross INR100 crore (US$18 million) and became one of the biggest commercial successes of 2012.[11] She is currently working in David Dhawan's Partner 2 opposite Salman Khan, Govinda and Sanjay Dutt.

Khan also has signed two Tamil films. Her first Tamil film is Naan Rajavaga Pogiren directed by Prithvi Rajkumar and written by Vetrimaaran in which she is doing an item number, and her second film is Karikalan in which she is playibg the role of "Velir princess" and is directed by Gandhi Krishna. Khan is also doing Sohail Khan's Partner 2 with Salman Khan and Govinda replacing Katrina Kaif.
