Deval Laurdine Patrick (born July 31, 1956) is an American politician, civil rights lawyer and business executive who serves as the 71st Governor of Massachusetts. A member of the Democratic Party, Patrick served as the Assistant United States Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division under President Bill Clinton. He is the state's first African-American governor and the third of only four African-Americans to serve as governor in a U.S. state, after P. B. S. Pinchback of Louisiana, Douglas Wilder of Virginia, and preceding David Paterson of New York.
