Mike Smith is an English former football manager. Before becoming a manager, he had a playing career as an amateur, playing for the Corinthian Casuals and was a part of the Great Britain squad in the 1960 Olympic Games. Smith became the first English-born manager and first full-time manager of the Wales national football team, when he succeeded Dave Bowen in 1974, and guided Wales to the quarter-finals of the 1976 European Football Championship. He was replaced by Mike England in 1979 and after managing Hull City A.F.C. (1979–1982), he later returned for a second spell with the national team. In the mid-1980s Smith became the manager of Egypt, leading the team to victory in the 1986 African Cup of Nations; the only British manager to have won the competition as a coach.
