King Lear is an adaptation of William Shakespear's play of the same name (written between 1603 and 1606). The play itself is based on the tale of and ancient king known as Leir of Britain as told by the less than reputable Geoffrey of Monmouth in his 1136 book Historia Regum Britanniae.
