I really enjoyed this book and was thrilled when I found out that is was to be made into a film. A fascinating story on so many levels and even more enthralling as it is based in fact. Now I am disappointed to find out that Depp is cast in the lead. Who apart from Johnny D thought this would be a good idea...??? He should in the interests of his art, defer to someone like Willem Dafoe with the edginess that could bring a volume of integrity to the role...

i think making a movie of one of the greatest books in history is a bad idea. and if i may say so, i would never choose depp as shantaram. what the hell are they thinking? but hey... the movie company will cash in bigtime so destroying the book and all fans personal view of this awesome story is therefore justified. or is it? bah!

Shantaram is a 2003 novel by Gregory David Roberts, a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India where he lived for 10 years. While partially based on Roberts' own experiences, Roberts himself has clarified that the story and its incidents are largely fictional.
