Skippy is one of the first films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, in 1931, and to date is the only Best Picture nominee based upon a comic or graphic novel. The screenplay by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Don Marquis, Norman Z. McLeod, and Sam Mintz was based on the comic strip Skippy by Percy Crosby. For his performance, Jackie Cooper, at the age of nine, became the youngest person to earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, a record that still stands.
