At the premier of the Melbourne Film Festival Polanski was interviewed live via satellite for questioning on the making of Ninth Gate. He said that he had always wanted to work with a very good looking actor, in this case Johnny Depp. He also commented that it wasn't his best film and that he wasn't altogether finished with the subject of the occult. He gave fans the impression that there might be one more up his sleeve.

The Ninth Gate (1999) is a European-production movie, directed by Roman Polanski. It is a neo-noir, mystery thriller about the rare book business, wherein rare-book dealer Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is hired by bibliophile Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) to validate a seventeenth-century copy of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, by Aristide Torchia, and what he encounters en route.
