Bhikari Thakur was an Indian Bhojpuri language poet, playwright, lyricist, actor, folk dancer, folk singer and social activist, popularly known as the "Shakespeare of Bhojpuri". He published 29 books in his life including plays, poem etc. His most famous plays are Bidesiya and Gabarghichor, which is often compared with Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle . He is also known as the father of the Bidesiya folk theatre tradition.
