William Billy Bailey was a lawman of the Old West, whose August 12, 1871 murder instigated the Gunfight at Hide Park. Not much is known about Bailey's youth. It is believed that he was born and raised in Texas, and was believed to have migrated to Kansas through cattle drives, but that has never been confirmed. It is known that he worked off and on as a lawman and cowboy. He was reportedly easy going and even tempered, but a dangerous man. In three previous gunfights, he had killed two men prior to his being murdered by Mike McCluskie, a local gambler.
