Carolle made her way to Harlem, NY, finding work modeling and as a showgirl at the Zanzibar Cafe on Broadway. Before long, she had a string of male admirers, including boxing champion Joe Louis. Joe showered her with gifts and attention, and when her minister husband returned from the war, he made headlines by suing Louis for "alienation of affections." This ended Carolle's relationships with both men.
