The most startling revelation here may be that in 1970 Truffaut went into such a deep depression after the breakup of his affair with Catherine Deneuve that he was put on medication and for months did little but chain-smoke and wait for her to call. But this part of the book is so ham-fisted that Deneuve successfully sued the authors and their French publisher, who had to delete six passages from future editions. The original French version speculates on the reason for the breakup, citing an unrelated Life magazine interview with Deneuve; no wonder she sued. More troubling, the American edition deletes a brief mention of their re-established friendship, so in this baffling account he is suddenly directing her in ''The Last Metro'' as if nothing had happened.
