The Checkers speech or Fund speech was an address made on September 23, 1952, by then-Senator (R-CA) and then-Republican nominee for Vice President Richard Nixon, six weeks before the 1952 United States presidential election. Nixon had been accused of improprieties relating to a fund established by his backers to reimburse him for his political expenses. His place was in doubt on the Republican ticket, so he flew to Los Angeles and delivered a half-hour television address in which he defended himself, attacked his opponents, and urged the audience to contact the Republican National Committee (RNC) to tell them whether he should remain on the ticket. During the speech, he stated that he intended to keep one gift, regardless of the outcome: a black-and-white Cocker Spaniel that his children had named Checkers, thus giving the address its popular name.

Checkers was President Richard Nixon's American c*cker spaniel, who was given to the family by a Texas supporter who read that the president's daughters wanted a dog. But it wasn't just the cute and cuddly face of Checkers that made her an iconic presidential pet, but rather Nixon's famous "Checkers Speech." When Nixon was running for vice president on Dwight Eisenhower's presidential ticket, he was being questioned about his use of campaign donations. In order to remain on the ticket and save his then clean record, he made a television address to defend himself, making sure to note that the one gift he won't give back is the family c*cker spaniel, Checkers. Checkers has been credited for saving the politician's public appearance and keeping him on the ticket. http://www.onlinecertificateprograms.org/blog/2010/10-most-memorable-white-house-pets/

Every year, September 23 is designated National Dogs in Politics Day, which is also known as Checkers Day. Why Checkers? Because this day is the anniversary of a very famous pre-presidential Richard Nixon speech that introduced America to ... ... The Best-Known Presidential Dog to Never Have Lived in the White House. Although Nixon’s c*cker spaniel never lived in the White House, Checkers became quite a celebrity after then-Senator Nixon mentioned the dog in a televised speech on Sept. 23, 1952.
