David ap Mathew (1400–1484) was a Welsh knight, the son of Mathew ap Evan. After David Mathew saved the life of King Edward IV on Palm Sunday, March 14, 1461, at the Battle of Towton, he was made the Grand Standard Bearer of England. Sir David married Gwenllian, daughter of Sir George Herbert. He was killed by the Turbervilles of Coity Castle, Glamorgan, in a riot at Neath. David is the first of the family to be properly called "Mathew", "Mathews", and "Matthews". His tomb is in Saint Mary's Chapel at Llandaff Cathedral in Llandaff, Wales.
