Désiré Defrère (February 22, 1888 – August 31, 1964) was a Belgian-born American baritone and stage director for operas. He was trained as a singer in the city of his birth at the Royal Conservatory of Liège. He began his career at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie shortly before appearing in a minor role at the Royal Opera House (ROH) in London in 1909. There he was scouted by Oscar Hammerstein I who brought the singer to America. In the United States he had a long career as an opera singer in Chicago with a variety of companies from 1910 to 1934. He also made guest appearances on the international stage, and was especially active as a recurring artist at the ROH in London and the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
